etymologie television "Television? The word comes from the Latin half and half Greek. Nothing good to expect." (CP SCOTT, around 1910).

Tele comes from the Greek telos, which is currently interpreted as meaning "far", "distance". As for vision, it is from the Latin videre (see).

Small digression ...
I find it fascinating to see how words are born, and evolved. In fact, the idea of "seeing" is rooted in Indo-European word Weide. This gave the word idein in Greek, then idea. And from the Latin root, we had face ... and expression vis-à-vis (face to face =)!
